It’s a genuinely useful benchmark, but it’s also frequently misunderstood and misquoted online. This guide looks at which species and strains actually carry the highest reported concentrations, and what factors beyond genetics shape the number you end up with.

Native to the Pacific Northwest, Psilocybe azurescens is widely regarded as the most potent psilocybin mushroom found in the wild, with reported total tryptamine content as high as 2.51%. That breaks down to roughly 1.78% psilocybin, 0.38% psilocin, and 0.35% baeocystin. It’s a genuinely intense species, and one that also carries a notable risk of Wood Lover’s Paralysis, a temporary but disconcerting loss of motor control associated with wood-loving Psilocybe species. Azurescens is not a beginner’s mushroom by any measure.

Enigma, a striking mutation that grows as a dense, brain-like mass rather than a typical cap and stem, has also tested in the 2.5% to 3.5% range in various independent submissions, making it one of the more consistently high-potency cultivars available to home growers.

The Penis Envy Lineage: Redefining Potency

Few cultivars have shaped the potency conversation as much as Penis Envy and its many derivatives:

• Albino Penis Envy: commonly reported in the 1.5% to 2.3% range
• Penis Envy Uncut: a dense, slow-growing variant known for above-average potency
